The Cornerstone Of Strategy

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a marvel of modern technology. Its origins date back to the 1950s during the Sputnik era. Scientists at Johns Hopkins University discovered that by tracking the satellite’s radio frequency through the Doppler Effect, they could monitor its position. After numerous experiments and refinements, the GPS became accessible to the general public.

GPS has revolutionized air travel by enhancing navigation and safety. Moreover, it has made terrestrial navigation straightforward and reliable. Before its advent, we depended on verbal directions from acquaintances and often strangers, which came with their challenges. Now, with the aid of a GPS, even someone unfamiliar with an area can confidently navigate to a destination.

But how does the GPS function? Without going into the technical details, the GPS works by pinpointing your location (where you are), knowing your destination (where you are going), and then calculating the best route using a satellite.

Drawing a parallel between the GPS and your organizational journey reveals three crucial components for business success:

· Your current location —where are you, i.e., how is the business doing?
· Your future destination —where are you going?
· Your strategy —how would you get there?

These elements are encapsulated in the acronym GPS. Let me explain. The “P” in GPS stands for Position; it continually assesses where you are (current position) in relation to your end goal. The “G” symbolizes your Goal or desired destination, while the “S” represents the Strategy, the most effective route you employ to reach there. To truly succeed, clarity in your Goals, Position, and Strategy is essential. Think of it as your organizational GPS for success.

So, here’s my acronym for GPS.
